So hello everyone! Seems like the blog is working.
I guess I’ll use this very first post to explain about the state of my current life a bit.
As I mentioned on the About me-page, I’m a girl with MtF transsexual background, and currently living in Helsinki, Finland.
I guess I could say that I’ve been lucky to born in such a country at such a time with all the legal protections for transsexuals being around. There are some downfalls of course, including the fact that instead of just therapy, we have to get psychiatrists etc to believe that we really are born with the wrong bodyparts before we can get access to hormones. Our customs also tend to open packages which makes getting hormones without prescription very hard. Luckily I got my diagnosis quite quickly (around 5 months) so I didn’t have to worry about that. Some others haven’t been that lucky though and are currently more or less stuck.
Since the “therapy” here is part of the public health care, we can’t really change/choose our therapists. In fact, private people aren’t even allowed to diagnose transsexuality which makes going through the public health care the only option. Several other post-ops I know have said that, if they could go back time, they’d go do their transition in some other country. I’ve been quite happy so far though.
A positive thing that I can say about the system in our country is that the surgeries and some other stuff falls under public health care (tax payers pay). This means for example that we get 5 laser sessions for free as part of the process (sure it’s not really enough for almost anyone) but still a good start. Another good thing is that tracheal shave and SRS are also almost free. Of course with SRS the downfall is that our doctors only perform less than 10 surgeries a year and haven’t worked on the field for too many years. This has made me seriously think about going to surgery in either Thailand or Canada. We’ll see about that when the time comes.
I’m personally still going to laser as I still have few dark spots on my face that sometimes show up. I’m also going to voice therapy (also covered by the health care) in hope of getting the voice more passable.
Then about some normal issues. I’m currently a student of the University of Helsinki, the computer science department. The place is quite nice although I haven’t visited the building for several months (being lazy and then all the hassle with going fulltime, legal name change etc). However, I’m planning on finishing my Bachelor’s from there quite soonish and then switching to accounting in another school (if I can pass the exams). There are plenty of reasons for the change, including Linux knowledge being completely useless in my current work etc. I’m also hoping on having a fresh start there and making new friends. We’ll see…
Anyways, this kinda concludes my first post here. My life is kinda plain and normal so I probably won’t be posting too actively unless something really special happens.
